PEARL
PEARL
Ocean mother-of-pearl is a seashell used primarily in jewelry and ornaments. This shell is obtained from some large clams that live primarily in Japanese and South Pacific waters. Although mother-of-pearl is mostly white or gray in tone, it can also have various color tones such as green, brown, blue and even black.
Ocean nacre is formed by the combination of a series of mineral and organic components found in the crust it is in. The most important mineral components include aragonite and calcite. Aragonite is the main building block of nacre and consists largely of calcium carbonate. The brightness and shine of mother-of-pearl comes from organic components.
Ocean nacre has a long history. People have used mother-of-pearl to make jewelry and ornaments for thousands of years. It is known that in ancient Egypt, mother-of-pearl was especially associated with the goddess Isis. During the Roman Empire, the value of mother-of-pearl was so high that it was considered a material that only the rich and noble could own.
Today, ocean nacre is still considered a very valuable material. Mother-of-pearl is used to make jewelry and ornaments, as well as watch dials, musical instruments and other luxury items.
